UPCOMING GAMES

The best and biggest game releases for November

November 21

Monster of the Deep: Final Fantasy XV – PSVR

Forget saving the world – Monster of the Deep lets you just hang out with the main cast of Final Fantasy XV on a fishing trip. Unfortunately, your date with the four unfeasibly attractive young men is interrupted when the fish start getting fiesty, turning the chilled out excursion into a first-person survival experience against vicious sea-dwellers. A strange addition to the FF XV universe, but one that has us intrigued all the same.

Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier – PS4

A narrative adventure in the vein of Telltale Games' The Walking Dead or Minecraft: Story Mode, this explores the mounting tension between humans and the hyper-evolved apes introduced in the rebooted Planet of the Apes films. Set between the events of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes, players can guide either species building towards peace or war. Compatible with Sony's PlayLink feature, allowing multiple players to chime in on decisions, this adds a new perspective to the war.

November 22

The Inpatient – PSVR

Set in the same universe as Until Dawn, this tense VR horror places you as a patient of Blackwood Sanitorium. Suffering amnesia, you'll need to uncover who you are and why you're there – before it's too late. Branching dialogue and multiple endings will add replay value to this disturbing experience you're.

November 28

Resident Evil Revelations Collection - Switch

Capcom took the core Resident Evil games in disturbing new directions with Resident Evil 7, but the Revelations spin-offs remain closer to the series' roots - horrifying experiments, disturbing mutations, and vast conspiracies. This Switch bundle of both Revelations packs in every chapter of the originally episodic titles, all DLC, and is remastered for 1080p screens. The physical release only contains the first game on the card though, with a download code for Revelations 2, so you'll want to make sure you have enough memory card space to contain the terror.

Black Mirror – PS4, Xbox One, PC

Nothing to do with Charlie Brooker's bleak but brilliant anthology series, this is instead a reboot of a 2003 point-and-click adventure. Set in 1926 Scotland, players govern David Gordon as he visits his family's ancestral estate for the first time. The Gordons have many skeletons in their closet though, and their dark secrets threaten to claim the lives of everyone David loves – and his own sanity. A gothic adventure, beautifully updated.

Assassin's Creed: Origins – PS4, Xbox One, PC

Travelling back further in history than any Assassin's Creed game yet, Origins explores Ancient Egypt and the birth of the Brotherhood of Assassins and their efforts against a sinister cabal that will one day become the Templar Order. As new hero Bayek, players will explore one of the biggest game worlds Ubisoft has ever created, which looks stunning in 4K on Xbox One X. Refined, more precise combat, a wave-based arena battle mode, and even an educational "Discovery Tour" allowing you to explore Bayek's world without any objectives make this the most ambitious Assassin's Creedgame yet.

detroit become human

Detroit: Become Human gameplay preview

Previous David Cage games have received plenty of criticism. Heavy Rain, although considered a great experience, is noted for its tonal inconsistencies, while Beyond: Two Souls is widely recognised as an incoherent mess. Now it appears that lack of narrative cohesion could also be an issue for Detroit: Become Human. After enjoying a great hands-on demo of one scene, I witnessed a second presentation that was horrifically engaging and frustratingly bizarre. But weirdly, I still can’t help but be excited to experience more of the game.
Detroit’s plot focuses on a series of androids that have become sentient. How you behave in the guise of the characters and how you act as a ‘Deviant’ is down to you.
And it truly is up to the player. Quantic displayed the myriad ways in which any one scene can end via a flow chart – something players will see this at the end of every scene – that outlined all the possible choices you could make. Note that this isn’t an illusion of choice; for the first time it appears as though players have a genuine choice. Every single character within your control can die throughout the campaign, or they can all survive – and that’s very exciting.

The Hostage situation is but one of these scenarios. A Deviant carer android has killed members of the house and kidnapped the daughter. With the android standing on the edge of a balcony, holding her at gunpoint, you play the negotiator android, Connor, charged with diffusing the situation and, hopefully, saving the girl.
The trailer does a great job showing the myriad ways the scene can play. You can save the girl, but this scenario could also end horribly. Of course, I was aiming for the best possible ending.
Detroit plays exactly like other Quantic Dream titles, using twists and turns of both analogue sticks to interact within the environment, coupled with the touchpad and motion controls. Quantic remains one of the few developers to take full advantage of the DualShock 4’s repertoire.
In order to help establish the context of the crime, Connor can analyse elements of the crime scene before walking onto the balcony and beginning the negotiation. These are much like the detective segments in Heavy Rain or Batman’s Arkham games, where you use a ‘detective’ mode to analyse the room and reconstruct a sequence of events before your arrival on the scene.

Detroit: Become Human Trailers

Take a look at the Paris Games Week trailer below, featuring scenes from the “Stormy Night” chapter. Be warned, it features very mature subject matter including child and domestic abuse.
